Distraction Reactions Campaign
Distracted driving does — and should — cause an adverse reaction from those around you. If drivers saw how others reacted to their distracted driving, do you think they would change their behavior?
CDOT’s awareness campaign, “Distraction Reactions,” shines a light on the impact and impression distracted driving has on those around us. Distracted drivers do not often see the risk of their behavior until it’s too late.
CDOT’s goal is to change this perception by elevating the social stigma around distracted driving — harnessing the power of human reactions to emphasize that distracted driving is a negative action that puts everyone’s safety at risk. When you get behind the wheel, you’re not only in control of your own safety, your actions impact the safety of others. And when others see you drive distracted, there are going to be some strong reactions — shock, disbelief, fear.
It’s no surprise that distracted driving is a major threat to roadway safety in Colorado. Traditional distractions such as passengers, food, children and roadside visuals continue to distract drivers while handheld phones have further exacerbated the issue.
Despite the alarming consequences, 91% of Coloradans still admit to driving distracted weekly. Whether you take your eyes off the road for a second or five seconds, we want drivers to remember that distracted driving is more than disturbing. It’s dangerous.
We are asking Coloradans to take a stand against distracted driving. If someone in your life drives distracted, talk to them about their behavior. Let’s put an end to all distracted driving in Colorado. Do not be on the receiving end of these reactions.
