Seat Belt Safety Campaign Launches in March
In January, CDOT released preliminary data that shows 16 percent of people in Colorado do not wear their seat belts—and that 16 percent accounted for nearly half of all passenger vehicle fatalities in 2016. Overall, traffic fatalities in Colorado have increased for the second year in a row—up 24 percent since 2014. In 2016, there were 607 traffic fatalities in Colorado, compared to 547 in 2015.
In March, CDOT will relaunch the Beware of the Beltless seat belt safety campaign with the goal of increasing the seat belt use rate beyond the current 84 percent. The campaign focuses on the danger that unbelted people in vehicles pose to themselves and others, both inside and outside the vehicle. Stay tuned for more details on the 2017 campaign and how to access the latest resources and materials to support the message.
