NHTSA urges U.S. drivers to check for recalls during Vehicle Safety Recalls Week (NHTSA)

Shift into Safe News

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) urged drivers to check for vehicle safety recalls during Vehicle Safety Recalls Week, which ran March 3 to 9. If there are open recalls, owners should schedule a free repair at their local dealership as soon as possible.

Last year, 1,073 safety recalls affected more than 35 million vehicles and pieces of equipment, including tires and car seats. More than 29 million vehicles were recalled in 2024, highlighting the importance of checking for recalls and completing needed recall repairs.

“Checking for recalls on your vehicle could save your loved ones’ lives or your own,” NHTSA Chief Counsel Peter Simshauser said. “Spring is a great time to check for recalls. When you’re doing your spring cleaning, don’t forget to get all your open recalls fixed as quickly as possible.”

Checking for recalls on vehicles, car seats, tires and other equipment is easy, and repairs are free at your local dealership.

Check for Recalls

  • Visit NHTSA.gov/Recalls and enter the license plate number or vehicle identification number to check for any open recalls.
  • Contact a local dealership to schedule a free recall repair if a vehicle does have a recall.
  • Download NHTSA’s SaferCar app and let the app automatically send an alert if there is a recall.
  • Sign up at NHTSA.gov/Alerts to be notified by email about any safety recalls.
  • Remember to search for recalls related to car seats, tires and other vehicle equipment.

If an owner thinks their vehicle may have a safety defect that isn’t part of a current recall, they can check for recalls online or call the agency’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.
