Child Passenger Safety outreach at Denver’s Juneteenth Festival

Shift into Safe News

In mid-June, Denver’s historic Five Points neighborhood transformed into a hub of education,
entertainment and celebration in honor of Juneteenth, the day in which the last of the nation’s enslaved people learned of their freedom.

CDOT and Car Seats Colorado joined other community partners in the Youth Zone to deliver educational materials to parents and caregivers in attendance as part of their effort to ensure every child is properly secured in an approved and appropriate restraint system while riding in a motor vehicle. Certified child passenger safety technicians were also available to answer questions and demonstrate how to properly secure a child in a car seat or booster seat that is appropriate for their age, height and weight.

According to 2022 data from NHTSA, child safety seats have been shown to reduce fatal injury by 71% for infants under a year old and by 54% for toddlers 1 to 4 years old in passenger vehicles. However, research also shows that some children are at greater risk of being unrestrained in a vehicle when killed in traffic crashes — 50% of Black children killed in car crashes were unrestrained, followed by Hispanic children (45%). By comparison, non-Hispanic white children killed were unrestrained 33% of the time.
