Yield to pedestrians: new tool uses holistic data to prioritize the needs of people walking

(Minnesota DOT) Every transportation investment decision has an impact on people walking, and people walking make up the most vulnerable users of the transportation system. How do we determine the highest priority areas to improve for people walking based on factors like safety, health, existing infrastructure, land use, and equity? Alta developed a new analysis framework that provides a unique solution that can be used in communities across North America.
Alta worked with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) on its Statewide Pedestrian System Plan to create a framework for safe, convenient, and desirable walking for all Minnesotans. The team created the Priority Areas for Walking Study (PAWS), the first MnDOT tool to guide walking investment priorities.
