The Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy (JHCIRP) has recently issued Recommendations of the Safe System Consortium.
As safety changes have failed to shift the rank in traffic fatalities as the leading cause of death for young people as well as endemic inequities rooted in our road transportation system, the Safe System approach has emerged in order to change the way roads affect our lives.
In early 2021, the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy (JHCIRP) and the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) convened a group of engineers, scientists, public health professionals and safety experts to discuss the potential for reimagining road safety and equity in the United States.
These recommendations are also timed to respond to the opportunities presented by a new federal surface transportation bill and the identification of priorities by a new team of senior officials at the U.S. Department of Transportation.
