Dangerous by design

Zero is possible, but we have a long way to go, especially for our most vulnerable roadway users. The new edition of Dangerous by Design, released by Smart Growth America and the National Complete Streets Coalition, shows just what happens when we don’t act decisively enough around traffic safety. And this burden isn't felt equally: from 2010 to 2019, Black people were killed at a rate 82% higher than their White counterparts, while American Indians and Alaskan Natives were killed at a rate 221% higher. Reducing roadway fatalities requires us to take a multi-modal approach. Everyone working in the transportation space should see this report’s important data and identify gaps in existing traffic safety efforts.
