US 34 Timber Bridge Replacement East of Laird
About the Project:
The Colorado Department of Transportation and its contracting partner, Lawrence Construction Company, will begin improvements on two timber bridges located on US Highway 34 east of Laird beginning April 1. This roadway provides important mobility to this region. The anticipated completion date of the project is December.
The timber bridges will be removed and replaced with concrete bridges east of Laird at the Republican River and one mile west of the Colorado-Nebraska state line.
Project Benefits
- Replacing the bridges with concrete is because it's known for its high compressive strength, making it capable of supporting heavy loads. It also has excellent durability, resisting deterioration from weather, chemicals, and abrasion over time. This longevity reduces the need for frequent maintenance and repairs compared to other materials.
- The project will enhance safety for Colorado’s traveling public by replacing the aging bridges. Colorado, like many states, faces challenges related to aging infrastructure, including timber bridges that may no longer meet safety standards or require frequent maintenance due to deterioration.
