Mead to Berthoud

The speed limit on the project has been lowered to 65 mph. Please obey speed limit signs.

Please note a significant increase in traffic volumes is expected along the project corridor Sept. 20 and 21 with the Loveland Airshow and other sporting events happening in Fort Collins and Loveland. Please allow additional time to get to your destination.

Sunday and Tuesday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., there will be a northbound I-25 right lane closure between Weld County 34 and Weld County Road 38 to allow crews to move safety barriers.

Monday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., northbound I-25 under WCR 38 will be temporarily closed to allow crews to pour concrete for the new bridge deck over the roadway.

  • Northbound I-25 traffic will be rerouted using temporary detour off- and on-ramps
merging with the I-25 E. Frontage Road. No turning movements will be allowed on or off WCR 38 during this time.
  • I-25 E. Frontage Road south of WCR 38 will be closed. North- and southbound Frontage Road traffic will travel east to Colorado Boulevard to access I-25, WCR 34, WCR 36 or Weld County Road 32.

Monday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., there will be southbound I-25 alternating lane closures at WCR 38 to allow crews to pour a new concrete bridge deck.

Tuesday, starting at 5 a.m., WCR 38 at the I-25 E. Frontage Road will be temporarily closed through mid-October. Crews will rebuild and improve the intersection as part of the WCR 38 bridge reconstruction over I-25.

  • Westbound WCR 38 traffic will drive east to Colorado Boulevard, turn south and either turn west onto WCR 34 to access local destinations or turn west onto Colorado Highway 66 to enter I-25.
  • Northbound I-25 E. Frontage Road traffic will be diverted south and turn onto WCR 34 to access local destinations or enter I-25.
  • No southbound vehicles will have access to the I-25 E. Frontage Road between WCR 38 and Weld County Road 40 and should use Colorado Highway 56, Colorado Boulevard, and WCR 34 for local access.

Monday, Sept. 22 through Friday, Sept. 26, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., WCR 32 under I-25 will be
temporarily closed to allow crews to work on bridge overhangs.

  • Westbound WCR 32 traffic will take the East I-25 Frontage Road south to Mulligan
Street, turn east to County Road 9.5, turn south to Colorado Highway 66, turn west to Weld County Road 7, and turn north to WCR 32.
  • Eastbound WCR 32 traffic will take WCR 7 south to CO 66, turn east to WCR 9.5, and turn north to WCR 32.

WCR 38 I-25 North Express Lanes Full Closure Map

Weld County Road 38 over I-25

WCR 38 over I-25, east of Mead, is closed through December 2025 to allow crews to
reconstruct the bridge over the highway. Detours will be in place:

  • Eastbound WCR 38 traffic will take Weld County Road 7 south to Weld County Road 34, turn east to the I-25 E. Frontage Road and turn north to WCR 38.
  • Westbound WCR 38 traffic will take the I-25 E. Frontage Road south to WCR 34, turn west to WCR 7, and turn north to WCR 38.

More information on the Weld County Road 38 bridge demolition and reconstruction:

  • The current Weld County Road 38 bridge was built in 1960, and a larger bridge is needed to span the widened I-25 section. The new bridge will have an 8-foot-wide sidewalk for multimodal connections over I-25. The new bridge will also be built “on
alignment,” or in the same position as the current bridge, which was decided in coordination with the Town of Mead. Usually, CDOT replaces a bridge directly adjacent to the old bridge, to allow the old bridge to be used during construction of the new bridge. The demolition of the current bridge and the complete construction and roadway tie-in of the new bridge will be completed while the WCR 38 east/west connection over the interstate is closed from June to December 2025.
  • CDOT is aware this six-month bridge outage is a significant inconvenience for daily
users. Ultimately, this decision will invest money in permanent infrastructure in another area of the project and save Colorado taxpayer money. CDOT will prioritize
keeping the Weld County Road 34 and I-25 interchange open during the WCR 38 bridge closure to help facilitate east/west movement across the interstate.

Additional Closures:
A temporary closure of Valley Road is ongoing to allow crews to reconstruct the bridge over the road. This closure will be in place through summer 2025. Motorists should plan accordingly, as no detour route is available.

Southbound I-25 traffic shifted to the northbound lanes between Colorado Highway 56 and Colorado Highway 66 into a head-to-head configuration and will be in place through 2025.

I-25 North Express Lanes: Now open for testing!

As of Friday, Dec. 15, 2023, the I-25 North Express Lanes, Berthoud to Fort Collins, hit a major milestone and is now substantially complete.

While most of the work in this section of I-25 is done, CDOT and the contractors will have various intermittent lane closures through spring 2024 to finish final project punch list tasks. The Express Lanes are now open for testing, but drivers should also prepare for intermittent closures of these lanes in 2024. Express Lane tolls are waived during the testing phase.

For future project updates and information, please continue to check the project website and CoTrip.org.

Drivers are encouraged to try the Express Lanes by entering through the dashed white lines. When using the lanes, drivers are reminded to follow these rules to ensure the safety of everyone on the road:

  • Do not cross the solid white lines (tickets for violations start at $75 each).
  • Enter and exit at the designated areas only, which are marked with a white dotted line.
  • Obey posted speed limits. The Express Lanes cannot be used to pass slower moving vehicles.

Motorists should expect various overnight and lane closures, including in the Express Lanes, while the last of the construction wraps up and tolling equipment is installed. The Express Lanes are anticipated to begin tolling in 2024. Once tolling begins in 2024, motorists are encouraged to sign up for an ExpressToll account to save an average of 40% on tolls.
