I-70 B 1st Street & Grand Avenue - Construction Phase

Work this Week

Nov. 21, 2021

  • The project team will be off, Nov. 24-28 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.
  • Motorists are reminded to take it slow through the temporary roundabout. Crews are reporting increased vehicle speeds at this location and encourage motorists to slow down in order to anticipate any changing conditions or other vehicles while driving through the roundabout.
  • Several partial side streets remain closed in order to continue excavating the eastbound lanes of mainline I-70B, and to continue work on CO340/Broadway and Grand Ave. The side street closures are: west side of White Ave., west side of Rood Ave., north end of Spruce St. and the north entrance of I-70B & Mulberry St.
Guardrail installation on the project is anticipated to begin in early December.

Business Access

  • Motorists seeking access to any of the businesses on the southwest side of I-70B (i.e. Subway, Shell Gas Station) should use Rice St. south to White Ave. east. For access to businesses northeast of the Grand Central Shopping Plaza, motorists should take Mulberry to the newly constructed US 6 frontage road.
  • Due to the new traffic configuration with the temporary roundabout, motorists are encouraged to late or zipper merge up to the closure points on the different legs of the roundabout.
  • Access to the Grand Central shopping center is the new US 6 frontage road, which can be reached from Mulberry St. or eastbound I-70B. The entrance from CO 340/Broadway on the east side of the complex that connects to the frontage road is also open. The traffic configuration at this location will be westbound right turn only onto the frontage road and right turn only out of the complex heading west on CO 340/Broadway.
  • Traffic on I-70B from Main St. to the northern end of the project, up to American Way, continues in a head-to-head configuration in the westbound lanes. This traffic configuration is in place 24-hours a day/seven days a week.
  • The extended closure of North 1st St. will be in place between I-70B and Chipeta Ave until winter shutdown of the project is scheduled. Access to businesses on North 1st St. will remain open. The preferred alternate route for access to North 1st St. is from North Ave., with a detour in place from Gunnison St. to 4th St. to Grand Ave.
