CO 96 East of Westcliffe in Custer County

Project Complete!

The Colorado Department of Transportation will begin improvements to State Highway 96 in Custer County beginning on June 1 with guardrail replacement through out the project are beginning on the west of the project. The project will improve approximately 26 miles of CO 96. The project was contracted to APC Southern Construction, of Golden, for 11.3 million and is expected to be completed in November.

The resurfacing project begins at mile point (MP) 0 and continues west to MP 26. Work will include pavement milling and paving, full depth roadway repairs, shouldering, erosion control, guardrail replacement, seeding, delineators, signing and high visibility striping.

The project will enhance safety for travelers on this two-lane highway. When completed motorists will find a smoother roadway surface with high visibility markings, stabilized shoulders and paved turnouts. A smooth highway surface is not only safer, but also enhances the driving experience for motorists


Work Schedule

  • Work will take place during daylight hours, 7am to 7pm, Monday through Friday. Night work and weekend work are not anticipated at this time.

Traffic Impacts

  • Alternating single lane closures on CO 96 between MP 0 and MP 26
  • Width restrictions of 12 feet will be in place Monday thru Friday, 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM within the project boundary.
  • Flagging personnel be on sight to direct travelers as the speed limit will be reduced to 40 mph in the active work zone during working hours.
