CO 21 Powers Boulevard and Airport Road Construction Update

Sept. 26, 2024

Overnight lane closures on Powers Boulevard near Airport Road Sept. 30 - Oct. 3

For four nights (Sept. 30 - Oct. 3), various lane closures will be in place on Powers Boulevard near Airport Road from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. The lane closures are necessary while crews set temporary concrete barriers in the median of Powers Boulevard, restripe the highway and move traffic into a new alignment.

Uniformed traffic control officers will be present during the overnight work. Drivers should be prepared for mobile operations and frequent traffic control changes. Alternate routes are advised.

This work is weather-dependent, and the schedule may change.

Powers Boulevard temporary traffic shifts required for bridge work in the center median

As described above, a new traffic alignment is anticipated soon on Powers Boulevard. On or after Oct. 1, Powers Boulevard travel lanes will shift away from the center median utilizing temporary pavement recently placed as part of the project. The same number of travel lanes and turn lanes will be available. This new configuration will be in place through 2025.

The new median work zone will allow space to construct the center bridge piers for the new diverging diamond interchange. Drivers should proceed with caution and avoid following trucks into the work zone.

Traffic signal work expected at Stewart Avenue / Airport Road on Sept. 27

Crews will be working near the Stewart Avenue / Airport Road intersection during the day on Sept. 27. Travelers should be aware of brief and infrequent traffic holds of approximately five minutes during off-peak travel times (from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. only). Flaggers will be present to help direct traffic. No travel delays are expected before 9 a.m. or after 3 p.m.

About the Project

The Colorado Department of Transportation and WW Clyde are constructing a major improvement project in east Colorado Springs to replace the existing Powers Boulevard (CO 21 / US Highway 24) and Airport Road intersection with a diverging diamond interchange.

Construction activity will take place adjacent to the highway with minor traffic impacts on Powers Boulevard and Airport Road during the first year of construction. The project is expected to be complete in late 2026.
