US 50 Blue Creek Sand Dome

Project Overview

Crews will reconstruct US 50 through Blue Creek Canyon, mile points (MP) 121.84 to 124.30—approximately four miles east of the Montrose-Gunnison county line.

This project will:

  • Widen the roadway with 12-foot travel lanes with 8-foot shoulders.
  • Flatten horizontal alignment curvature to improve safety and increase design speed.
  • Build a rock buttress—via rock cuts and cantilevered MSE walls throughout the inner canyon—to mitigate slope stability problems near MP 122.

Project construction started in May 2016 and is scheduled to be completed in September 2017.
