Project Facts

  • Cost: $3.5 Million
  • Contractor:  Martin Marietta
  • Timeline: April to October 2021
  • Location: US 40 in Genesee between South Mt Vernon Country Club Road and County Road 93 near Golden

About the Project

In late April, the Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor Martin Marietta will begin a resurfacing project along six miles of US 40 from South Mt Vernon Country Club Road in Genesee to County Road 93 (Morrison). The repaving project also includes widening the shoulders and improving guardrail structures and drainage.

Project Benefits

  • Repaving will enhance the safety and ease of use for motorists and cyclists traveling along the road.
  • Guardrail replacements and shoulder widening are added safety benefits for the traveling public.
  • Drainage improvements will help decrease standing water conditions.

Work Schedule

  • Work is scheduled to begin in late April and continue through October 2021. However, these operations are weather and temperature dependent, and this schedule could change.
  • Working hours will be from 6 a.m. – 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
  • Occasional weekend work may be possible from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Traffic Impacts

  • Single-lane closures up to 1.5 miles long will be in effect during working hours.
  • Traffic holds: Both directions of traffic will be using one lane of travel for that 1.5-mile lane closure segment, therefore one direction of traffic will be stopped at a time for up to 20 minutes.
  • Cyclists must share the lane with motorists and follow pilot car and flagging operations.
    • Uphill bike traffic (westbound)- A pilot car will follow cyclists through the work zone. If a cyclist is unable to traverse the 1.5 miles during the allotted time, they can rest outside of the travel lanes and the pilot car will remain with the cyclist.
    • Downhill bike traffic (eastbound)- Cyclists can follow eastbound vehicles through the work zone during the allotted time.
  • Motorists and cyclists should expect grooved pavement until paving operations are completed. Alternate routes are recommended if possible.
  • Lane shifts throughout the project may occur.
  • Please drive safely through the work zone when crews are present.
