Project Overview

About the Project

US 34 is one of the main transportation facilities for travel to and from Estes Park Colorado. Bridge structures C-15-I (MP 66.220) and C-15-J (MP 65.532) are located less than one mile apart on US 34, and were constructed in 1937. The bridges provided for passage over the Big Thompson River, and are noted for their rigid-connection camelback pony truss design. Both bridge structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NHRP), and are a symbol of local identity. Properties and structures located adjacent to the structures also have potential historic eligibility under determination. The SH 34 Big Thompson Bridge project qualifies as a [d] 3, Class II Categorical Exclusion bridge replacement project.

Project Intent

The intent of the project work is to: replace structures C-15-I and C-15-J; complete all roadway work and all bridge work within existing CDOT ROW; minimize construction time and impacts to adjacent property owners and US 34 users; and maintain and enhance environmental resources within the project limits.

Project Location

The Project is located in Larimer County, east of the town of Estes Park, Colorado, on US 34 between Mile marker 65.4 and Mile marker 66.3.

Construction Configuration

The Construction Configuration is defined as all Work that the Contractor is required to construct. The Construction Configuration is defined by the details for roadway and bridge structure typical sections. The general layouts can be found in more detail on MicroStation and InRoads files provided by CDOT, as referenced in the Contract. The construction elements will require design by the Contractor's team prior to construction. All constructed elements shall accommodate the Construction Configuration, as defined and detailed in the plans.
