US 160/South Broadway Reconstruction in Cortez

Project completed

About the Project

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has begun reconstruction on US 160/South Broadway between McElmo and Maple streets in Cortez, Colorado (mileposts 37 to 38). The reconstruction project was contracted to Lawson Construction for $4.8 million. The project will include removal of existing asphalt and concrete resurfacing, with storm drainage and traffic signalization improvements along a 1.1-mile stretch. Business access will be maintained throughout the duration of the project. CDOT began the construction in early July 2012 and anticipates completing construction by April 2013, weather permitting.

Project Update

On Friday, March 29, Lawson Construction activated the new signal at US 160/US 491 and the intersection is now open to traffic.

Final work activities include:

  • For the week of April 1, weather permitting, crews conducted the requisite concrete ‘smoothness’ testing and will smooth any rough areas with a process called diamond grinding to smooth riding surface and remove any other construction or environmental related rough areas.
  • Additionally, crews will complete any final curb and gutter work and install signing and final striping (a combination of inlaid plastic markings and paint) by the end of the April, weather permitting.

Motorists can expect intermittent single-lane closures and minor traffic delays, likely through the end of April. Slow for the Cone Zone!
