US 24 & Fountain Avenue Traffic Flow Improvements to Pikes Peak Highway in Cascade

Project Overview
This project team will make improvements to the US Highway 24/Fountain Avenue intersection to better accommodate traffic flow to the Pikes Peak Highway and the Pikes Peak summit. Specific work will include the following:
- lengthened the green light at the intersection's traffic signal;
- extended the left turn lane at the intersection; and
- improved Ute Pass Avenue (frontage road), including installing better signage;
- Note: El Paso County is currently completing improvements to the frontage road to encourage traffic to use it when exiting the Pikes Peak Highway on Fountain Avenue.
Partner Efforts
CDOT collaborated with El Paso County, Pikes Peak – America's Mountain/Pikes Peak Highway, the Colorado State Patrol, the City of Colorado Springs and other officials to improve this intersection.
- The Cascade Water District completed a project.
- The Colorado State Patrol conducted enforcement on US 24 (from mile points 290 to 300) including aggressive driving, distracted driving, driving under the influence and other patrols.
- Pikes Peak - America's Mountain has done the following:
- realigned the toll gate entrance to the Pikes Peak Highway, enabling more vehicles to line up, and closer to the gate;
- begun opening all three toll gates to the Pikes Peak Highway at 7:30 a.m.;
- increased to seven the number of rangers at one time accepting tolls;
- expedited traffic flow by installing fiber/WiFi at the gateway for speedier transactions; and
- contracted with Colorado State Patrol to assist with traffic control.
