I-70 Eagle Essential Wall Repair

Project Complete

About the Project:

The Colorado Department of Transportation and prime contractor, Siete Inc., will begin a wall replacement project along westbound I-70 in Dowd Canyon on Monday, May 6. Work will take place from Mile Marker 169.5 to MM 171.5 in Eagle County between Eagle-Vail and West Vail. Crews will remove portions of the existing earth wall above US 6 at MM 170.5 and replace it with a new Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) wall. Additional roadway widening, new guardrail installations, lighting and striping will also take place through the project zone.

Project Benefits

  • Protect the future integrity of the roadway.
  • Enhance the aesthetics of the corridor.
  • Provide a safer and more enjoyable driving experience.

Work Schedule:

  • The project is anticipated to begin the first week of May and continue until the fall of this year.
  • General working hours will take place from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Some intermittent nighttime operations may take place as needed throughout the project.

Nearby CDOT Projects

There are several CDOT projects in the area during the 2024 construction season. Travelers are encouraged to check COtrip.org for the most up-to-date information about traffic impacts and to select the best route. Projects are the US 6 and Post Boulevard Roundabout, I-70 Mile Point 170.5 Essential Wall Repair Project, I-70 Dowd Canyon Variable Speed Limit Sign Project, and the US 24 Resurfacing south of Minturn project. All four projects will be underway by June 2024.

Traffic Impacts:

Travelers can expect the following impacts for the duration of construction:

  • Closure of the US 6 to westbound I-70 on-ramp starting early May and continuing through mid-August. A detour route will be in place during this time. Cars will be rerouted on eastbound I-70 toward West Vail to the Exit 173 off-ramp, around the roundabout on Chamonix Road, to the westbound I-70 on-ramp back toward Eagle-Vail (see detour map for additional details).
  • During daytime hours, drivers can expect westbound shoulder closures with minimal impacts to traffic. Single lane closures are anticipated for the occasional nighttime operations.
  • Intermittent single lane closures with flagging operations may be necessary on US 6 throughout the project.
  • Refer to COtrip.org for real-time travel conditions and road closures
