Clear Creek Scour Mitigation on I-70

Project completed

About the Project

State and federally-funded scour mitigation project along Interstate 70 and Clear Creek in Jefferson County. Work includes adding micro-piles and concrete caps to the piers of two bridges at the I-70/I-76 interchange and armoring a wall along I-70 and Clear Creek near Wadsworth Boulevard.

Erosion of the soil around a bridge or wall's foundation is frequently referred to as scour which can over time lead to structure failure. To manage the risk of failure, countermeasures are used to mitigate scour effects.

Work Schedule:

  • The project began on Monday, Nov. 14 and will last until spring 2023. Working hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. (daylight hours) Monday to Friday. Some Saturday work is expected.

Traffic Impacts:

  • Intermittent lane closures will exist at the northbound and southbound Wadsworth on ramps to eastbound I-70 during concrete work
  • This work is expected to begin in January 2023
  • Some overnight left lane closures and/or narrowing will be in place on westbound I-70 from just west of Harlan Street (Exit 270) to east of Wadsworth Blvd (Exit 269A) for access to the bridge piers
  • Access to the Clear Creek Trail will be maintained, with occasional narrowing in place, managed by flaggers and signage
  • This Trail is also under reconstruction by the City of Wheat Ridge. Please refer to the City of Wheat Ridge's official website for more information on impacts
  • Construction signs, cones and devices will be present 24/7 alerting motorists, pedestrians and cyclists to the closures and restrictions
  • All construction schedules are weather dependent and subject to change
  • Lane closures and other traffic notices are posted weekly to www.cotrip.org

Other Traffic Impacts:

Please be advised of traffic impacts from two other projects that fall within or near this project's limits:

  • The Wadsworth Improvement Project (a City of Wheat Ridge project) is currently underway
    • Reconstruction of the eastbound I-70 on ramp from northbound Wadsworth Blvd has taken place, but future closures may exist. This project lasts until 2024.
  • The Harlan Street Bridge & Interchange Improvement project is currently underway with ramp and lane closures in place on I-70 and on Harlan St, with traffic detoured to Wadsworth Blvd
    • Motorists should expect delays and detours through this section of the I-70 corridor
