New Gazex® & O’bellx® Avalanche-Control System
Crews have built a remotely controlled avalanche system on Stanley Mountain and 80 Slide path to assist CDOT with avalanche control activities. This system operates by mixing oxygen and propane, or hydrogen gas, in exploder nozzles (pictured) at the top of high-risk zones.
When the gas mixture explodes, the force of the explosion is directed down toward the snow, producing a controlled avalanche. This remote system is more reliable and safer for personnel to operate.
WARNING
Avalanche control can occur at any time while you are in the backcountry. Please stay away from the system.
