South Federal Raised Medians
Project Facts and Contact Information
- Contractor: Jalisco International, Inc.
- Timeline: April - October 2020
- Location: South Federal Boulevard from Alameda to Vassar
- Cost: $3 million
CDOT will improve South Federal Boulevard from Alameda Avenue to Vassar Avenue by installing raised medians. Work will include removal of pavement, curb and gutter, median installation, signing and striping.
This project will provide improved safety to motorists and pedestrians. Raised medians provide refuge islands that allow pedestrians to cross on direction of traffic at a time, wait in the island of the raised median and then cross the other direction of traffic when prompted. The raised medians will reduce car crashes, reduce vehicle speeds and decrease the rate and severity of crashes.
Facts and Benefits
- Under three miles of medians will be built from Vassar to Alameda beginning this spring.
- There will be breaks in medians at signalized intersections and emergency vehicle access.
- Medians will improve pedestrian safety by separating traffic on the heavily traveled section of South Federal Boulevard. This will significantly reduce pedestrian, broadside and approach turn crashes
Background
The median project is part of the City of Denver's Federal Boulevard Corridor Plan to transform the corridor so it is safer and more pedestrian friendly, while serving the transportation needs of all users.
