CO 64 Bridges West of Meeker
About the Project
The Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor R.L. Wadsworth have begun a bridge replacement project on Colorado Highway 64 just west of Colorado Highway 13. The work consists of replacing two bridge structures on CO 64. The existing structures are located at Mile Point 54 (White River Bridge) and MP 70 (Strawberry Creek Bridge). The project is anticipated to end in fall 2024.
The work includes building temporary detours in order to keep traffic moving during the construction of the two new bridge structures. The current bridges are at the end of their service life, have very low sufficiency ratings, and do not meet modern design standards. The project will also include grading, guardrail removal and replacement, roadway reconstruction, erosion control, signing and permanent striping.
White River Bridge
The existing structure on CO 64 over the White River was built in 1948. Over its 73 years of service life, the sufficiency rating of the bridge has decreased, and has been on CDOT's Top Priority Bridge list since July of 2018. Due to the hydrology of the White River and multiple factors leading to a low sufficiency rating of the existing bridge, it was determined that a complete replacement was preferable to rehabilitation for this structure.
Strawberry Creek Bridge
The Strawberry Creek structure was built in 1950. Over its 71 years of service life, the sufficiency rating of the bridge has decreased, and is now considered a functionally obsolete structure. Due to substandard load carrying capacity and bridge-roadway geometry, in addition to the poor existing timber condition, it was determined that a complete replacement was preferable to rehabilitation and widening for this structure.
Project Benefits
- The current bridges are at the end of their service life, have very low sufficiency ratings and do not meet modern design standards.
- The newly built White River Bridge will replace the existing structure with a longer and wider one to meet the standards for highways of this classification and speed, and to reduce the risk to mobility on the state highway system.
- The newly built Strawberry Creek Bridge will replace the existing structure with a wider one, using more modern design standards, to meet the guidelines for highways of this classification and speed, and to reduce the risk to mobility on the state highway system.
