CO 17 Culvert Replacement & Repairs
Project Complete
About the Project
This is a permanent repair project on CO 17 in three different locations just north of the New Mexico state line after a sinkhole was discovered last year on the highway. Crews evaluated the culverts in the area and found it necessary to reinforce the drainage with larger outlet piping, build wing walls and headwalls and change out piping from steel to concrete.
Project Benefits
Improved culverts at designated mile points (MP) will help to mitigate any further damage to the road from those culverts that previously failed. There are three locations in the three-mile stretch of road:
- MP 3.0 – In addition to the construction of concrete headwalls, wing walls and aprons, the culvert will have dissipation baffles welded to help manage high creek flows.
- MP 2.7 – There are three culvert pipes at this location. All pipes will be increased in size to assist with flow and all of the existing steel pipes will be upgraded to a reinforced concrete material.
- MP 0.3 – The existing damaged steel pipe will be replaced with a larger reinforced concrete pipe. On the inlet side, a headwall will be built.
Work Schedule
- Work is scheduled to begin on Monday, Aug. 12 and go through the second week of November
- Working hours will be from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday
Traffic Impacts
- Plan for single-lane alternating traffic and brief delays
- Motorists will encounter full stops guided by a temporary traffic signal
- A 10-foot width restriction is in place
- Refer to COtrip.org for real-time travel conditions and road closures
