SH 14 over the Poudre River
Project Description
This project replaced the State Highway (SH) 14/Mulberry Street bridge over the Cache La Poudre River in Fort Collins west of I-25. Built in 1949, the original bridge was deemed structurally deficient and warranted replacement as part of the Colorado Bridge Enterprise (CBE). The new bridge nearly doubles the width of the original bridge to provide an additional westbound travel lane, bicycle lanes, eight-foot sidewalks and a landscaped median. Other project features include new retaining walls, storm sewer and a modified access to the Waste Water Treatment plant. The finished structure incorporates many urban beautification features: decorative pedestrian railings, stone details, structural stained concrete, raised planters, and custom etchings on the bridge columns.
The active construction zone was between Riverside Avenue and South Lemay Avenue within the City of Fort Collins. The project required a temporary detour for eastbound State Highway 14 traffic between Riverside and South Lemay Avenues.
Project Timeline
The project was awarded to Flatiron Constructors, Inc. in August 2014 and was substantially complete in November 2015.
Project Budget
The total cost of the construction project was approximately $9.6 million. The project was funded by the CBE, which was formed in 2009 as part of the FASTER (Funding Advancement for Surface Transportation and Economic Recovery) legislation. The purpose of the CBE is to finance, repair, reconstruct and replace bridges designated as structurally deficient or functionally obsolete, and rated in poor condition. This additional transportation funding is essential to allowing CDOT to better maintain and improve the safety of our bridges.
