Mt. Harris Canyon Project Site

Rockfall Mitigation Project Overview

The rockfall mitigation project will help with rockfall prevention in Mount Harris Canyon in Routt County. Located along US 40 between mile marker (MM) 113 and MM 120, the project was located east of Craig and west of Steamboat Springs.

Crews removed 480 cubic yards of loose rocks from existing rock walls and slopes (called scaling), installed a rockfall fence above the roadway, and cut and installed 212,660 cubic feet of wire mesh to redirect rock and debris into the nearby ditch. Yenter Companies was the contractor for this nearly $1 million project (contracted at $982,000).

Resurfacing Project Description

Beginning Thursday, June 21, work began on the highway resurfacing project on US 40 near Hayden between mile marker (MM) 108 and MM 114. In order to create a much-needed smoother surface on the interstate, crews will strip the existing roadway, recycle the asphalt, and use the existing materials to resurface the highway. Guardrails will also be repaired throughout the length of the project. Work is expected to last until September 2012. Elam Construction and Paveover Inc. are the contractors for the $3.7 million resurfacing project.
