North I-25 Express Lanes: US 36 to 120th Avenue

Project completed

About the Project

In October 2013, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) began a safety and mobility project on a six-mile segment of I-25 between US 36 and 120th Avenue.

Project Benefits

  • Maximizes the use of the existing highway infrastructure to expand the capacity of I-25 by adding one HOV/tolled Express Lane in each direction
  • Resurfaced the existing general purpose lanes along this six-mile stretch
  • Connect directly with the existing I-25 Express Lanes, leading into and out of downtown Denver
  • Provides motorists the option of carpooling or paying a toll for a faster, more reliable commute, or using the existing general purpose lanes for free

Progress

This project is now complete.

See information about the current project to extend North I-25 Express Lanes from 120th to the Northwest Parkway/E-470.

Sound Walls

New sound walls have been installed along northbound I-25 between US 36 and 84th Avenue, and adjacent to the bike path between 104th and 120th avenues. New sound walls have also been constructed along southbound I-25 between 120th Avenue and Thornton Parkway.

About the Express Lanes

In spring 2016, the High Performance Transportation Enterprise (HPTE) and CDOT opened both the northbound and southbound I-25 Express Lanes between US 36 and 120th Avenue. The lanes extend the existing Central 1-25 Express Lanes in Denver, which end at US 36.

Testing was completed and tolling began in spring 2016. Drivers can choose to ride a bus, pay a toll as a single driver, or carpool for free with an ExpressToll account and Switchable HOV Transponder. The three adjacent general purpose lanes continue to be free.
