The US 36 Express Lanes connect Boulder to Denver at I-25—specifically from Federal Boulevard in Westminster to Table Mesa Drive in Boulder. There is an Express Lane in each direction, alongside general-purpose lanes. The US 36 Express Lanes connect to the reversible I-25 Central Express Lanes between US 36 and downtown Denver.

How to Use the Express lanes

Drivers can carpool, pay a toll or use the 18-mile commuter bikeway between Denver and Boulder.

HOV3+ users must have an ExpressToll account, a Switchable HOV transponder set to “HOV” mode, and three or more people in the vehicle to use the Express Lanes for free.

Motorcyclists can use the Express Lanes for free without a pass.

Bus

The Express Lanes accommodate Bus Rapid Transit (BRT).

  • Lanes are open 24/7.
  • 16 miles of Express Lanes from Federal Boulevard to Table Mesa Drive.
  • The lanes connect to the I-25 Central Express Lanes.
  • Motorcyclists can use the Express Lanes for free without a pass. All other vehicles are tolled.
  • HOV 3+ and bus services are available with a switchable HOV transponder.
  • Adjustable toll pricing system used-prices depend on the time of day.
  • Overhead signage indicates current toll prices. Tolls are collected through the vehicle’s ExpressToll account or through a License Plate Toll.
  • The Safety and Toll Enforcement Program is in effect. Sophisticated roadside technology is used to enforce the following rule:
    • No weaving across double solid white lines.
