Bridge & Structure Inspection
The Bridge and Structure Inspection Unit is responsible for:
- Evaluating, inspecting, and recording the structural condition of highway structures through on-site inspections, tests, analyses, and engineering judgment, via state employees and consultant personnel
- Managing the contracts and work performed by consultant inspectors
- Scheduling routine, special, and emergency inspection of bridges and culverts with a crossing greater than four feet, tunnels, walls, overhead signs, mast arm signals, and high mast lights
- Assisting maintenance and design personnel to assess and evaluate existing structures
- Identifying critical repair needs
- Inspecting completed repair work
- Ensuring that the Department is in compliance with the Federal National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) program for major bridges
- Ensuring that the Department is in compliance with the Federal National Tunnel Inspection Standards (NTIS) for tunnels
- Implementing the Off-System Bridge Inspection Program
- Maintaining the Colorado specific inspection manuals and guides in accordance with the latest national specifications and FHWA regulations.
