Rural bridge rehabilitation project set to begin March 17

Travel Advisory

March 5, 2025 - Northeastern Colorado - Work will occur at 10 structures along I-70

Lincoln and Kit Carson Counties — The Colorado Department of Transportation will begin a bridge preventative maintenance project on March 17 along Interstate 70 on the Eastern Plains. Bridge preventative maintenance work will occur just east of Limon on a 33-mile stretch from Limon to Flagler, Mile Points 362 to 394.5.

The project is expected to be complete by late November.

The first phase of the bridge preventative maintenance project will happen over eight months on I-70, beginning just east of Limon (MP 362) and moving east toward Flagler (MP 394.5). The work will include removing the existing concrete deck topping or hot mix asphalt and receiving a polyester concrete overlay or waterproof membrane and hot mix asphalt overlay. Structures Inc., of Englewood, is the contractor for this $5.2 million project.

“These are only 10 of our 3,447 bridges in CDOT’s transportation system, performing these essential and preventative maintenance repairs are necessary to extend the lifespan and keep the traveling public safe,” said Regional Transportation Director Heather Paddock, who oversees Northeastern Colorado.

The preventative maintenance work will feature repairs to the existing bridge deck and expansion joints, improving the bridge's durability. The maintenance will also feature new overlays, including Polyester and Asphalt, designed to increase the lifetime of the bridge decks.
