CDOT begins resurfacing I-25 on Raton Pass

Las Animas County — The Colorado Department of Transportation, in partnership with United Companies, will begin the Interstate 25 Surface Treatment project south of Trinidad on Raton Pass on April 7. This project is located in Las Animas County with the work zone stretching from Colorado-New Mexico state line (mile point 0) to just south of Exit 8 (MP 7.6).
Work consists of a two-and-a-half-inch hot mix asphalt mill and overlay, pavement markings and delineation. Once complete, the project will improve drivability and provide safer road conditions for travelers. The project is expected to be complete in Fall 2025.
Traffic Impacts
Beginning April 7, motorists and area residents can expect the following impacts during construction:
- Work will occur during daytime hours, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Traffic holds up to 10 minutes
- Single lane closures, double lane closures and shoulder closures will take place within the work zone
- Reduced speeds in the work zone
- Plan ahead and expect short delays
- Construction schedules are weather dependent
- The project is scheduled for completion in Fall 2025

The following tips are to help you stay safe while traveling through maintenance and construction work zones.
- Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
- Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
- Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
- Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
- Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
- Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
- Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
- Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
- Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
- Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
- Be patient!
