Powers Boulevard to close overnight north of Airport Road for bridge girder installation

Feb. 6, 2025 - Southeastern Colorado - Overnight directional closures will take place Feb. 20 to Feb. 23

Colorado Springs — The Colorado Department of Transportation will close one direction of Powers Boulevard (Colorado Highway 21/US Highway 24) overnight for four consecutive nights (Feb. 20 to Feb. 23) north of Airport Road. These safety closures are required while bridge girders are placed over Powers Boulevard. This work is part of the CO 21 Powers Boulevard and Airport Road Interchange Project.

This is the first of several rounds of night closures that will be needed to install girders on the second bridge, set deck panels and pour the concrete bridge deck over the highway.

Traffic Impacts

Motorists can expect one direction of Powers Boulevard (CO 21) to be closed Feb. 20 through Feb. 23. Traffic impacts will include:

Only one direction of Powers Boulevard will close at a time as follows:

  • Thursday, Feb. 20: Southbound Powers Boulevard closed at East Platte Avenue from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.
  • Friday, Feb. 21: Northbound Powers Boulevard closed at Airport Road from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Saturday, Feb 22: Southbound Powers Boulevard closed at East Platte Avenue from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.
  • Sunday, Feb. 23: Northbound Powers Boulevard closed at Airport Road from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

This schedule is weather-dependent and subject to change. Message boards near the project site will provide the latest schedule information. Travelers should expect single and double lane closures as early as 7 p.m. All closures will be removed from the highway in time for the morning commute.

Uniformed traffic control officers and flaggers will help direct traffic overnight. The signed detour routes are:

  • Southbound Powers Boulevard detour: Traffic must exit the highway at East Platte Avenue. The detour route will direct traffic west on East Platte Avenue, south on Academy Boulevard and east on Airport Road.
  • Northbound Powers Boulevard detour: Traffic must turn left or right at Airport Road. The detour route will direct traffic east on Airport Road to the northbound Powers Boulevard on-ramp at Stewart Avenue.

  • Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
  • Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
