US 550 closed south of Silverton on Tuesday evening for tow recovery operations

October 1, 2024 - Southwestern Colorado - Travelers advised to use alternate route of CO 145, via Telluride

Southwest Colorado - The Colorado Department of Transportation closed US Highway 550 south of Silverton (Mile Points 69 to 70) at approximately 6 p.m. on Oct. 1. The full closure is necessary to recover a crashed semi-truck. Motorists are warned that the closure could last several hours and there is no estimated time of re-opening.

Motorists traveling between Montrose and Durango should use the alternate north-south route of Colorado Highway 145, via Telluride. The most current opening times will be updated on www.COtrip.org.

The rollover crash occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Crews were able to alternate traffic around the wreckage onto the northbound lanes until tow recovery operations began.

  • Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
  • Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
