A rockfall occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. on US 550 Red Mountain Pass

Ouray and San Juan Counties — US 550 Red Mountain Pass is closed between Silverton and Ouray due to a rockfall. The boulder will require downsizing in order to remove it from the highway. Crews will begin work at first light, Wednesday morning. It is unknown when the highway will reopen.

Travelers may consider the alternate route via CO Highway 145 through Telluride.

  • Don't change lanes unnecessarily.

  • Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
  • Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
