Montezuma and La Plata Counties - On Monday, August 12, crews will be chip sealing on US Highway 160 starting near Durango West Subdivisions I and II (Mile Point 76) and moving eastbound toward the City of Durango. The crew will work in two mile sections to the end of the project work zone near Wildcat Canyon Road, MP 82.

This past week, crews completed approximately nine miles of chip seal operations west of Durango (MP 67 to MP 76). Since July 29, approximately 15 miles of US 160 have been resurfaced between Mancos and Durango. The chip seal surface must cure for 14 days, then the roadway will receive permanent striping.

Once the Mancos to Durango section is complete, crews will begin chip seal operations on US 160 east of Bayfield near Yellow Jacket Creek at MP 118 and moving westbound in two mile sections a day toward Bayfield. Work is anticipated to start on the Bayfield section on Wednesday, Aug. 14. Due to current wet weather conditions, delays in operations may be possible.

Motorists Should Plan For:

  • Monday through Wednesday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Mancos to Durango location, there will be two mile sections with single lane alternating traffic (MP 76 to MP 82) guided by traffic control operations and a pilot car
  • Wednesday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m at the Bayfield location, there will be two mile sections with single lane alternating traffic (MP 118 to MP 112) guided by traffic control operations and a pilot car
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 40 mph in the work zone
  • Plan ahead and expect up to 20 minute delays
  • Construction schedules could change depending on the weather

Driving Through Chip Seal Projects

Travelers are urged to:

  • Slow down - Higher speeds can cause loose stones to scatter, and damage vehicle paint and windshields
  • Increase distance between vehicles - Space between you and other vehicles will help reduce damage caused by loose stones
  • Follow work zone signage - Use caution and consider worker safety when traveling through a work zone
