Rock fall mitigation taking place on US 550 north of Hermosa

September 8, 2023 - Southwestern Colorado - Motorists can expect short delays on September 14

La Plata County — The Colorado Department of Transportation will perform rock fall mitigation along US 550 between Hermosa and The Glacier Club. The one-day mitigation operations will occur on Thursday, September 14 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Motorists should plan for full stops and brief delays while crews work on a 1-mile stretch of US 550 to address areas of concern along the ridgeline above the highway.

Traffic stops will allow crews the opportunity to perform hillside operations and to remove any rock or debris from the roadway.

On Thursday, September 14, motorists can expect brief delays on US 550 while CDOT crews perform rockfall mitigation between Hermosa and The Glacier Club.

Traffic Impacts

Daytime work hours range from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, September 14.

  • Travelers will encounter full stops and up to 15-minute delays
  • Traffic will be guided through the work zone by cones, signs and flagging personnel
  • Motorists are urged to slow down and watch for flaggers, work crews and heavy equipment in the area

  • Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
  • Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
  • Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
  • Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
  • Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
  • Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
  • Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
