Single lane closures on Alameda over South Platte River next two weekends
Travel Advisory
Denver – One lane of eastbound and westbound Alameda Avenue (CO 26) will be closed between I-25 and Lipan Street for the next couple of weekends, allowing the old road surface to be removed and replaced with new asphalt.
While the lanes are closed, drivers should be prepared for traffic shifts during the following time periods:
- Friday, Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. to Saturday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m
- Friday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. to Saturday, Oct. 21 at 8 p.m
Motorists are reminded to slow down and use caution when traveling through the construction zone to maintain safety for the work crews and traveling public.
The work is part of the Alameda Avenue Improvement Project, which includes replacing the South Platte River Bridge, the oldest on the state highway system. It was constructed in 1911 and widened in 1966.
Additional safety improvements include:
- Building a multi-modal corridor by modifying the intersections on Alameda at the I-25 southbound off-ramp, and South Kalamath Street.
- Eliminating South Platte River Drive between Alameda and Cedar avenues, and diverting traffic to a widened South Lipan Street, north of West Alameda Avenue
- Reconstructing and improving the sight distances on the South Platte River Trail by adding a 12-foot concrete path, a four-foot finely crushed stone trail, and three-feet of vegetated shoulders for an overall trail width of 22 feet
- Constructing an on-street two-way bike lane on the north side of Alameda between Lipan and Kalamath streets, with a connection to the South Platte River Trail
- Installing a water quality pond
- Improving sidewalks on both sides of Alameda
Schedule and Travel Impacts
- Two lanes of eastbound and westbound Alameda through the work zone remain open during construction. Motorists should be prepared for narrowed lanes and plan for added travel time. Access remains to all area businesses
- Expect intermittent single-lane and turn-lane closures on South Platte River Drive
- Overnight or weekend closures are expected in late October or early November for bridge removal work. A detour will be in place
- Lipan Street has been built out in preparation for removing South Platte River Drive
- The South Platte River Trail remains open but detoured around the construction zone
- Regular working hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday
Schedules are subject to change based on weather and available resources. The $22.3 million dollar project is scheduled for completion at the end of 2024.
