Paving set to start on Highway 96
Travel Advisory
Kiowa County — The Colorado Department of Transportation is paving the 25-mile segment of CO 96 between U.S. 287 near Eads and Sheridan Lake beginning this month. Work also includes new guardrails and minor structure repairs.
In addition to providing a smoother driving surface, the project will enhance safety with the addition of new, higher visibility striping.
Traffic Impacts
- Work schedule: Monday through Friday – daylight hours
- Delays up to 15 minutes – flaggers alternating one lane of traffic through the work zone
- Speed limit reduced to 40 mph. Fines doubled for violators.
- Vehicle wider than 11 feet restricted from traveling through the work zone
- A & S Construction of Cañon City is the contractor for the $12.7 million project. It is schedule for completion in October 2023.

- Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
- Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
- Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
- Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
- Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
- Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
- Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
- Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
- Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
- Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
- Be patient!
