CO Highway 17 is closed near the New Mexico state line due to sinkhole in roadway

May 26, 2023 - Southwestern Colorado - CO 17 in Conejos County, is open to one-lane alternating traffic. Motorists will be guided by a temporary portable light signal where severe road damage occurred just north of the New Mexico state line, MP 0.3.
Southwest Colorado ― CO 17 is closed just north of the New Mexico state line due to a large sinkhole in the roadway. The safety closure is in place for both northbound and southbound traffic. The closure includes a 17-mile stretch of CO 17 from the Colorado-New Mexico border to the Horca area, Mile Points 0 to 17.
For safety, CDOT has determined that the highway will remain closed until engineers can determine the extent of the highway damage. It is not known when the highway will reopen.
Traffic Impacts
- The northbound closure point is located at the NM state line, about 15 miles north of Chama, NM, MP 0
- The southbound closure point is located at the Horca area, about 20 miles west of Antonito, MP 17
- Do not bypass the closure barricades
