Improvements on US 138 in Logan County start June 12
Project Update
Logan County — The Colorado Department of Transportation and Simon Contractors will begin a widening and overlay project on US 138 between Sterling and Iliff. Work is set to begin June 12, and the anticipated completion is November.
The construction work will begin east of Sterling at Mile Point 3 and will end east of Iliff at MP 13.5. The widening work will occur between MP 3 and the CO 113 junction. While widening the roadway, the existing asphalt will be milled and filled with 4 inches of new hot mix asphalt. The mill and fill will occur the full length of the project, providing a smoother roadway for motorists.
"Improving rural roadways is a key priority for CDOT, and widening shoulders is an essential part of making these roads safer for motorists. By expanding the shoulder, we can provide more space for vehicles to pull over or for wide agricultural vehicles to travel in their lane, decreasing the likelihood of head-on accidents and allowing emergency responders to reach drivers in need more quickly,” said Northeast Regional Transportation Director Heather Paddock.
Additional safety measures will involve enhancing the bridge rail and guardrail to deter vehicles from veering off the road. To improve wayfinding, new signage will be put up, while brighter and more visible lane markings will be painted for better lane recognition. Additionally, rumble strips will be added to the shoulder, which is an effective strategy to decrease the occurrence of crashes due to vehicles departing from the roadway.
Travel Impacts
- During construction, motorists can expect alternating lane closures.
- Daytime work hours are from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
