Maintenance chip seal projects next week
Travel Advisory
El Paso County – Chip sealing operations are scheduled on three highway segments in the Colorado Springs area next week.
From 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., flaggers and a pilot car will alternate traffic through each work zone, with a reduced 30 mph speed limit:
- Monday, July 17: US 24 between Calhan and Ramah (mile 342 to 345)
- Tuesday, July 18: CO 94 between Yoder and Rush (mile 28.5 to 32)
- Wednesday, July 19: CO 83 – between North Gate Road and County Road 105/Walker Road (mile 25.9 to 28.3)
Delays up to 15 minutes should be anticipated.
Following each resurfacing, sweepers will be cleaning the highway in the evening and, if necessary, the following day, clearing the remaining small, loose rocks prevalent in chip seal resurfacing areas.
Chip sealing applies liquid asphalt and rock material (or aggregates) to a roadway, followed with a protective coating. It is a preventive maintenance operation, designed to extend a highway’s effective surface life five to 10 years, depending upon traffic volumes and climate.
