All southwest mountain passes opened for travel on Friday afternoon after completion of winter maintenance operations

February 24, 2023 - Southwest Colorado - US 160 Wolf Creek Pass, US 550 Red Mountain Pass & CO 17 Cumbres and La Manga Passes are open

Southwest & South-Central Colorado - Update (2/24/23): The Colorado Department of Transportation has opened US 160 Wolf Creek Pass, US 550 Red Mountain Pass and CO 17 Cumbres and La Manga Passes after winter maintenance operations were successfully completed on Friday afternoon. Maintenance crews worked as quickly and safely as possible to ensure the mountain corridors were cleared of snow slide debris and made safe for motorists.

  • US 550 Red Mountain Pass opened at 2:20 p.m.
  • US 160 Wolf Creek Pass opened at 1 p.m.
  • CO 17 Cumbres and La Manga Passes opened at 12:30 p.m.

US 550 Molas Pass Winter Operations

US 160 Wolf Creek between Pagosa Springs and South Fork
US 160 Wolf Creek Pass closed for winter maintenance operations. Eastbound traffic is being stopped at Treasure Falls (MP 157) and westbound traffic is being stopped just west of South Fork (MP 184).

US 550 Red Mountain Pass between Silverton and Ouray
US 550 Red Mountain Pass is closed for winter maintenance operations. Northbound traffic is being stopped just north of Silverton (MP 71) and southbound traffic is being stopped south of Ouray (MP 92).


CO 17 Cumbres and La Manga Passes southwest of Antonitio
CO 17 ( MP 0 - MP 17) will close intermittently beginning at 10:00 a.m. today. Expect significant delays. Crews will attempt to allow traffic through as operations allow.

All other southwest and south-central Colorado passes are currently open, but please be aware that closures may occur at any time due to weather events and snow removal operations. Travelers are encouraged to check COtrip.org for updates.

The following tips are to help you stay safe while traveling through maintenance and construction work zones.

  • Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
  • Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
  • Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
  • Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
  • Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
  • Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
  • Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
