February 17, 2023 - Southeastern Colorado - Work this week includes Interstate 25 nighttime and daytime lane closures

Colorado Springs —­­ The Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor SEMA Construction continue work on improvements on I-25 between South Academy Boulevard and Santa Fe Avenue (mile point 135-127). As part of the I-25 improvement project, the planned southbound right lane closure near Mesa Ridge Parkway (exit 132) for light pole installation has been rescheduled. The closure is now scheduled for Monday, February 20 through Wednesday, February 22.

In addition, there will be nightly alternating lane closures Sunday, Feb. 19 through Thursday, Feb. 23 on northbound I-25 between MP 127-134, for embankment work and to shift barrier, and a right lane closure on southbound I-25, between MP 134-133, for embankment work.

Expect a nighttime mobile lane closure operation on I-25 north- and southbound from MP 135-127 to refresh lane striping on Monday, February 20, and also a daytime mobile closure on Tuesday, February 21 for cleaning of safety devices.

The right lane closure eastbound on Colorado Highway 94 is still in place for this week as construction crews perform electrical work on lighting. A full closure is still in place at CO 94 and North Blaney Road. South Blaney Road has been re-opened. Use caution accessing from the one open, CO 94, eastbound lane, as the climbing lane / turn lane remains closed.

Nightly closures:

  • Sunday, Feb. 19 through Thu., Feb. 23, 7 p.m. – 6 a.m. southbound I-25 right lane closure between MP 134-133
  • Sunday, Feb. 19 through Thu., Feb. 23, 6 p.m. – 6 a.m. northbound I-25 right lane closure between MP 127-129
  • Sunday, Feb. 19 through Thu., Feb. 23, 7 p.m. – 5 a.m. northbound I-25 left lane closure between MP 131.5-134
  • Monday, Feb. 20, 6 p.m. – 6 a.m. north- and southbound I-25 mobile closures between MP 127-135
  • Monday, Feb. 20 through Wed., Feb. 22, 7 p.m. – 6 a.m. southbound I-25 right lane closure at CO 16 (MP 132).
  • Wednesday, Feb. 22, 6 p.m. – 6 a.m. northbound I-25 alternating left and right lanes closures between MP 130-134

Daytime closure:

  • Tuesday, Feb. 21, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. north- and southbound I-25 mobile closures between MP 127-135

  • Single lane closure eastbound, Sun., Feb. 19 through Sat., Feb. 25
  • A full closure is in place on North Blaney Road. Vehicles will not be able to access North Blaney Road from CO 94 or access CO 94 from North Blaney Road.
  • South Blaney Road has been re-opened. Use caution accessing from the one open, CO 94, eastbound lane as the climbing lane / turn lane remains closed.
  • A traffic shift is in place.
  • Speed limit 50 MPH.

Project Overview | Interstate-25 – Safety and Efficiency Improvements

The improvements to I-25 addressed in this project are located along an approximately 7.5-mile segment of south I-25 beginning at South Academy Boulevard and extending to the Santa Fe Avenue (CO 85/87) exit at Fountain (MP 128), which exits to Gate 19 of Fort Carson. The project includes:

  • Replacement of two bridges crossing over South Academy Boulevard
  • Widening of both inside and outside shoulders and installing safety improvements
  • Concrete surface treatment overlay to provide an improved riding surface
  • Installation of median barrier
  • Rehab and widening work on four bridges
  • Installation of an I-25 southbound deceleration lane at the interchange with Colorado Highway 16

Safety Benefits

CDOT conducted a safety assessment for the corridor to evaluate the magnitude and nature of safety problems and analyze the causes of crashes. These transportation improvements are mitigation measures to reduce crashes, improve infrastructure, and address physical deficiencies that contribute to crashes in the corridor. Over the next 20 years, the project is estimated to result in fewer deaths, injuries, and crashes on the four MAMSIP corridors.

  • Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
  • Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
  • Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
  • Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
  • Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
  • Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
  • Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
