CO 151 closed south of Chimney Rock National Monument while CDOT performs emergency culvert and road repairs
Travel Advisory
Archuleta County — CO Highway 151 is closed to through traffic approximately five miles south of the US Highway 160 junction and 10 miles north of Arboles. The closure was put into place yesterday at 4 p.m. after the Colorado Department of Transportation was alerted of erosion issues on the highway caused by heavy spring run-off. Road repairs are dependent on water levels receding. Motorists should plan for a long-term closure to be in place through the end of May.
On Tuesday, CDOT observed large volumes of water carrying natural debris, creating a high potential for sinkholes to form underneath the road surface. Emergency culvert and road repairs will be conducted after the creek levels adjacent to the highway subside.
“Rapidly warming temperatures following an epic winter in Southwest Colorado have the potential to cause flooding on our highways. If you are driving and your route is blocked by flood waters or barricades, we urge you to turn around and find a safer route,” said Julie Constan, Southwest Colorado Regional Transportation Director.
Motorists should not attempt to bypass road barricades at the closure points and are encouraged to seek alternative routes.
