Travel Advisory

April 3, 2023 - Northeastern Colorado - There will also be closures of the southbound off-ramp at MP 254, and the western Frontage Road (County Road 5) south of LCR 16 during the 90-day closure

Larimer County — Starting Wednesday, April 12, at 7 a.m. to Tuesday, July 11, the Colorado Department of Transportation and the I-25 North Express Lanes Project will close Larimer County Road 16 under I-25 (Mile Point 254).

There will also be closures of the southbound off-ramp at MP 254, and the western Frontage Road (County Road 5) south of LCR 16 during the 90-day closure. These closures will allow crews to complete construction of new roadway, improved ramps and a new roundabout planned for this location. Full closures decrease the duration of traffic impacts and increase safety for the traveling public and crews. There will be access to local businesses during the closure. Please follow posted signage in the area for detours:

  • Southbound I-25 traffic intending to exit onto eastbound LCR 16 will continue south to Weld County Road 48/Colorado Highway 60 (exit 252), turn around, re-enter I-25 north to exit 254, turn north on the SE Frontage Road, and turn east onto LCR 16.
  • Southbound I-25 traffic intending to exit onto westbound LCR 16 will instead exit at Colorado Highway 402/E. County Road 18 (exit 255), turn west onto CO 402, turn south onto County Road 7, and turn west onto LCR 16.
  • Eastbound LCR 16 traffic needing access to I-25 will travel south on CR 7, turn east onto WCR 48/CO 60 and enter I-25.
  • Eastbound LCR 16 traffic will travel south on CR 7, turn east onto CO 60/Larimer County Road 14, turn north onto the SE Frontage Road, and turn east onto LCR 16.
  • Westbound LCR 16 traffic will travel south on the SE Frontage Road, turn west onto LCR 14/CO 60, turn north onto CR 7, and turn west onto LCR 16.

Construction is weather-dependent and subject to change.

Major components of this project to be completed during this closure include:

  • Reconstruction and paving of LCR 16 roadway
  • Reconstruction and paving of improved southbound I-25 off-ramp
  • Construction of new southbound I-25 on-ramp
  • Construction of new roundabout west of I-25, connecting southbound on- and off-ramps and County Road 5
  • Embankment work
  • Installation of curb and gutters, islands, lighting and drainage

Benefits of the LCR 16 detour at I-25 include:

  • Greatly reduces the overall impact to the traveling public.
  • Allows a large amount of work to be completed without continual interruptions through the remaining construction of this interchange.
  • Saves real costs associated with the inefficiencies of additional detour work and changes to the work flow in this area.

Please visit codot.gov/projects/north-i-25, for the most current travel updates. The I-25 North Express Lanes Project: Berthoud to Johnstown section will increase highway capacity by adding an Express Lane in each direction, rebuild interchanges, replace aging bridges, straighten highway curves to improve safety, make major utility and drainage improvements, and add carpool and transit facilities. During construction on the I-25 North Express Lanes Project, motorists should expect speed reductions to 65 mph, minor lane shifts, temporary concrete barriers and median bridge work. Motorists should also expect delays during the scheduled work hours. Construction on the Berthoud to Johnstown segment is expected to be complete in early 2024.
