CDOT to close CO 60 at I-25 for 21 days for I-25 North Express Lanes project starting Sept. 12

Travel Advisory

September 8, 2022 - Northeastern Colorado - This full closure will decrease the duration of traffic impacts and increase safety for the traveling public and crews

Weld County – Starting Monday, Sept. 12, at 6 a.m. to Oct. 2 at 9 p.m., the Colorado Department of Transportation and the I-25 North Express Lanes Project will close eastbound and westbound Colorado Highway 60 at I-25.

There will also be various intermittent ramp closures during the 21-day closure. These closures will allow crews to complete drainage, paving and striping work necessary for the new Diverging Diamond Interchange planned for this location. After the 21-day closure, CO 60 over I-25 will be in a one-lane in each direction DDI configuration

This full closure will decrease the duration of traffic impacts and increase safety for the traveling public and crews. Please follow posted detour signage in the area. Construction activities are weather-dependent and subject to change.

Scheduled Closures and Detours:

  • Sept. 11, 9 p.m. to Sept. 12, 10 a.m.: Northbound I-25 on-ramp from CO 60 will be closed.
  • Sept. 12-20: Eastbound and westbound CO 60 bridges will be closed, including the southbound I-25 on-ramp and the northbound I-25 off-ramp.

Eastbound and westbound CO 60 bridges will be closed, including all I-25 on- and off-ramps at the interchange, for two days at a time.

  • Oct. 2: Eastbound and westbound CO 60 bridges will be closed, including all I-25 on- and off-ramps at the interchange

In addition, southbound Gateway Drive will be closed at Weld County Road 48 for paving, and the left turn lane from WCR 48 onto northbound Gateway Drive will be closed Monday, Sept. 12 at 6 a.m. to Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 5 p.m. Traffic will be diverted and detoured to Gateway Circle to the west.

While a 21-day closure will cause temporary travel impacts for residents and commuters, a full closure greatly reduces the overall duration of impacts to the traveling public. It also allows a large amount of work to be completed without continual interruptions through the remaining construction of this interchange, and it serves as a cost savings compared to inefficiencies of additional detours and partial closures.

During this maximum 21-day closure, crews will complete a variety of operations and bring the Project one step closer to another milestone. Work that will be completed during the closure includes:

  • Drainage pipe installation
  • Embankment work
  • Installation of curb and gutters, islands and traffic signals
  • Paving roadway and ramp approaches
  • Lane striping and pavement markings

The project team held a virtual public meeting on Monday, Aug. 22 to share information on this closure. A recording of the meeting, along with an informational video about diverging diamond interchanges are linked below:

Please visit www.codot.gov/projects/north-i-25, for the most current travel updates. The I-25 North Express Lanes Project: Berthoud to Johnstown section will increase highway capacity by adding an Express Lane in each direction, rebuild interchanges, replace aging bridges, straighten highway curves to improve safety, make major utility and drainage improvements, and add carpool and transit facilities. During construction on the I-25 North Express Lanes Project, motorists should expect speed reductions to 65 mph, minor lane shifts, temporary concrete barriers and median bridge work. Motorists should also expect delays during the scheduled work hours. Construction on the Berthoud to Johnstown segment is expected to be complete in early 2024.
