Bridge construction over Research Parkway at Powers Boulevard (CO 21) requires nighttime full closures

March 16, 2022 - Southeastern Colorado

COLORADO SPRINGS — During the overnight hours of March 20 and March 27 Research Parkway will be closed on the westside of Colorado Highway 21 (Powers Boulevard). The closure is necessary to safely pour the new bridge deck. The concrete deck is part of the new bridge overpass that will take CO 21 over Research Parkway. The project is anticipated to be completed this fall.

Traffic Impacts:

From 7 p.m., Sunday, March 20 until 5 a.m., Monday, March 21 and again from 7 p.m., Sunday, March 27 until 5 a.m., Monday, March 28.

  • Full closures of Research Parkway between Channel Drive and Powers Boulevard.
  • Eastbound Research Parkway and Powers Boulevard bound traffic from the west side will turn left on Austin Bluffs Parkway, continue north to Briargate Parkway and turn right. Continue east to access Powers Boulevard (CO21) or continue to Grand Cordera Parkway, turn left and continue south to access Research Parkway.
  • Westbound Research Parkway and Powers Boulevard bound traffic from the east side will turn right on Grand Cordera Parkway, continue north to Briargate Parkway and turn left. Continue west to access Powers Boulevard (CO21) or continue to Austin Bluffs Parkway, turn left and continue south to access Research Parkway.

The current traffic alignment, listed below, will be in place for several months:

  • Research Parkway has no direct through access across Powers Boulevard.
  • Northbound and southbound Powers Boulevard (CO 21) continues to have no impacts.
  • Access to Powers Boulevard from Research Parkway on the west side is limited to southbound access only, northbound and through access uses the signalized U turn south of the interchange.
  • Access to Powers Boulevard from Research Parkway on the east side is limited to northbound access only, southbound and through access uses the signalized U turn north of the interchange.

  • Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
  • Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
  • Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
  • Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
  • Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
  • Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
  • Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
