Micro-surfacing and improvements to US Highway 50 in La Junta will begin June 20

Otero County — The Colorado Department of Transportation, in cooperation with Intermountain Slurry Seal, will be micro-surfacing US Highway 50 between Mile Post 377.2 and MP 381.8. The project will start midway between Swink and La Junta and end just east of La Junta. The project will also include work on ADA ramps at the corners of US 50 and Carson Ave, Anderson St, Maple Ave, Lincoln Ave, Belview Ave, Santa Fe Ave, and San Juan Ave. Micro-surfacing is thin surface treatment used to improve the surface texture and protect the asphalt surface. The work being done will improve the longevity and functionality of this section of highway. Work will start on Monday, June 20 with completion expected in August.

Traffic Impacts

Beginning June 20, motorists will encounter work on US 50 at La Junta. Traffic impacts include:

  • Working times will be during daylight hours, Monday through Friday.
  • Various lane and shoulder closures will take place within the work zone with speeds reduced to 35 mph.
  • Traffic fines will be doubled in the work zone.
  • Motorists should slow down as they approach the work zones, drive with caution, allow extra space between vehicles, and give themselves extra travel time.

  • Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
  • Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
  • Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
  • Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
  • Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
  • Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
  • Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
