ADA ramp and lighting improvements to begin this week on US 50 & CO 291 in Salida

SALIDA — The Colorado Department of Transportation, in conjunction with the City of Salida, begnis construction upgrades at various locations along US 50 and CO 291 in Salida this week. Crews will mobilize today, Monday, March 29, with traffic control signage and devices put into the place by this afternoon. Work is expected to be completed by mid August. This project will enhance pedestrian and road safety.
As a partner in this improvement project, the City of Salida will also upgrade sidewalks, curb and gutter systems, median patterned concrete, and conduit for street lighting. Work will take place on US 50 and Palmer St. to CO 291 (Oak St.). The CDOT portion of the project includes work on ADA ramps at various intersections on US 50 and CO 291. The project will ensure that current federal standards with the Americans with Disabilities Act are met and maintained for enhanced accessibility and pedestrian safety. Crews will also upgrade sidewalks, curb and gutter systems, and asphalt patching.
Work will take place on US 50 from MP 220.48 to 223.40, and at E 15 St. Work on CO 291 will take place from MP 0.0 to 2.24. Work locations on CO 291 include Wood Avenue, B Street, D Street, E Street, G Street, I Street, L Street, M Street, N Street and O Street (see updated flyer).
Travel Impacts
Working hours are Monday through Saturday during daylight hours. Motorists should slow down, drive with caution and give themselves extra travel time.
Pedestrians & Bicyclists
- Sidewalk closures will be guided by flaggers only during working hours.
- Sidewalks will be closed with barricades and orange fencing overnight and on weekends.
- Pedestrians, cyclists, and skate-boarders are not permitted in construction work areas.
Motor Vehicles
- Minimal delays to traffic are anticipated, with shoulder closures and single-lane closures throughout the duration of the project.
- Street and driveway access will also be impacted with alternate routes indicated with signage.
- Access may be impacted but will always be maintained for businesses and property owners.
- The speed limit will be reduced to 40 mph within the work zone on US 50 and will be strictly enforced. Traffic fines will be doubled in the work zone.
