December 22, 2021 - Southeastern Colorado - CDOT continues construction with paving of emergency pullout and installation of advance warning signage on Interstate-25 resulting in nighttime lane closures

COLORADO SPRINGS — For the week of December 26 Colorado Department of Transportation and Contractor SEMA Construction, Inc. will continue work on Interstate-25 along a 7.5-mile segment between South Academy Boulevard and extending to the Santa Fe Avenue exit (CO 85/75). Work will take place during evening and early morning hours, with lane closures on southbound I-25 to continue installation of permanent advance warning signs for upcoming shift. In addition, construction of northbound emergency pullouts (MP 129.6, 130.7, 132.7 and 133.7) with paving and barrier installation will require right lane closures on northbound I-25. There will also be daytime shoulder closures on eastbound and westbound South Academy to prepare for the upcoming traffic shift.

Traffic Impacts

  • Southbound I-25 single lane closures and shoulder closures and northbound I-25 right lane closures between approximately South Academy Boulevard and Santa Fe Avenue (Mile Post 135 - 127.
  • Monday, Dec. 27 – Wednesday, Dec. 29, work hours approximate 7 p.m. – 5 a.m.
  • Friday, Dec. 31 – Sunday, Jan. 2, No work due to the New Year’s holiday. Work will resume Monday, Jan. 3.
  • Speed limit reduction to 55 MPH during construction hours
  • Eleven-foot width restrictions
  • South Academy Boulevard near I-25 daytime right shoulder closures
  • Monday, Dec. 27 – Wednesday, Dec. 29, nighttime work hours approximate 7 p.m. – 5 a.m.
  • Monday, Dec. 27 – Thursday, Dec. 30 daytime work hours approximately 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

In the future, travelers can expect daytime and nighttime traffic impacts. Intermittent daytime and nighttime lane closures should be expected. Traffic fines will be doubled in the work zone. Motorists should slow down as they approach the work zones, drive with caution, allow extra space between vehicles, and give themselves extra travel time. Dates of work are weather permitting

This work is part of the Military Access, Mobility & Safety Improvement Project (MAMSIP). MAMSIP is comprised of four discrete road projects in the Pikes Peak region, all of which are strategically important in the movement of personnel and equipment between nationally significant military facilities.

Project Overview

Interstate-25 – Safety and efficiency improvements

  • The improvements to I-25 addressed in this project are located along an approximately 7.5-mile segment of the corridor beginning at South Academy Boulevard and extending to the Santa Fe Avenue (CO 85/87) exit at Fountain (MP 128), which exits to Gate 19 of Fort Carson;
  • Replacement of two bridges crossing over South Academy Boulevard;
  • Widening of both inside and outside shoulders and installing safety improvements; 
    Concrete surface treatment overlay to provide an improved riding surface for this 7.5-mile segment;
  • Installation of median barrier the entire length of this corridor;
  • Rehab and widening work on four bridges along the corridor;
  • Installation of I-25 Southbound deceleration lane at the interchange with Colorado Highway 16.

  • Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
  • Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
  • Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
  • Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
  • Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
  • Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
  • Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
