Overnight full closures of I-25 near Thornton for overhead sign installation

THORNTON, CO — With major construction work now complete on the North Interstate 25 Express Lanes: 120th Avenue to Northwest Parkway/E-470 project, I-25 overnight closures are planned next week to complete installing overhead signs. Delays are expected and motorists should plan to add up to an additional 20 minutes to their trip.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS

Overnight (10 p.m. to 4 a.m.) on Tuesday, Jan. 7 – Southbound I-25 full closure between 136th Avenue and 120th Avenue, along with full closures of the 136th Avenue on-ramp to southbound I-25 and the southbound I-25 off-ramp to 120th Avenue. Motorists should exit southbound I-25 at 144th Avenue, travel west to Huron Street, south on Huron Street then east on 120th Avenue to reenter southbound I-25. No closures on northbound I-25.

Overnight (10 p.m. to 4 a.m.) on Wednesday, Jan. 8 –Northbound I-25 closure between 120th Avenue and 136th Avenue, along with a full closure of the 120th Avenue on-ramp to northbound I-25 and the northbound I-25 off-ramp to 136th Avenue. Motorists should exit northbound I-25 at 120th Avenue, travel east to Washington Street, north on Washington Street then west on 136th Avenue to reenter northbound I-25.  No closures on southbound I-25.

This work is weather dependent and subject to change.

PROJECT BENEFITS

  • Add capacity with one Express Lane in each direction.
  • Provide travelers with the choice of taking the general-purpose lanes for free or driving the Express Lanes for a faster trip in exchange for a variable toll - the Express Lanes will be free to vehicles with three or more people.
  • Build an auxiliary lane along northbound I-25 connecting the 136th Avenue on-ramp to the 144th Avenue off-ramp, helping drivers merge more comfortably between the two interchanges.
  • Resurface the roadway which will improve driving conditions.
  • Address necessary drainage and utility improvements along the corridor.

  • Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
  • Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
  • Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
  • Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
  • Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
  • Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
  • Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
  • Be patient!
